Forgotten Souls are important crafting materials players need for reaching the pinnacle of power in Diablo 4, yet somehow, most never have enough. Before getting started, it's important to understand that, as a general rule, higher Torment tiers grant greater rewards. So playing on the highest Torment level you can comfortably clear lets you farm materials even faster.
What are Forgotten Souls For
Forgotten Souls are used for Tempering and Masterworking as well as other end-game crafting. Large quantities are required to reroll and get the desired affixes on the piece of gear. Each time an item is tempered, it's going to set you back 50 Forgotten Souls and 25 Forgotten Souls every time you replace an affix. This cost adds up really quickly, so here's how to farm them fast.
Nightmare Dungeon with Material Reserve
The best and fastest way to farm these materials is by doing Nightmare Dungeons that contain the affix: Material Reserve. During the dungeon run, players will find lots of Horadric Chests. Each of these chests can contain upwards of 10 Forgotten Souls, making each run an extremely profitable activity.
To further increase your farming efficiency, it would be best to optimize the War Plans tree for Nightmare Dungeons. The first node to go for would be Goblin Fall, since this method of farming would mainly rely on goblins. It is then followed by these 3 nodes: Horadric Hunter, Altar of Avarice, and Greed is Good. Doing this gives a chance at entering Goblin’s Retreat for even more materials and loot. To take it even further, allocating Gauntlet allows for Treasure Goblins to be slain a second time, essentially. Doing so maximizes the chances for a portal to the Goblin’s Retreat to spawn.
Slaying Harbingers on Helltide
Running Helltides is also a valid option for farming Forgotten Souls; it's not as fast or lucrative as doing Nightmare Dungeons, but it's an option available for those who enjoy doing Helltide. However, players can also adjust their War Plans to make this farming method more efficient. The only node to get would be Fall of the Fell. What this does is spawn Harbingers more often, guaranteeing more Forgotten Souls.
Doing this farming method can generate a decent amount of Forgotten Souls, especially on Torment XII. To take it up a notch, players can also find Screaming Hell Veins that are scattered around the Helltide areas.
Salvaging and Crafting
Finally, the last and simplest method for gaining large quantities of Forgotten Souls would be to use Vendors. The Blacksmith can salvage old and ‘useless’ gear that the player no longer requires. The amount of Forgotten Souls that can be earned by salvaging depends mostly on the rarity of the item.
As a rule of thumb, players should only salvage the Ancestral tier to maximize the amount of Forgotten Souls. Items with at least 1 Greater Affix are guaranteed to earn at least 1 Forgotten Soul. This makes rare-quality items with Greater Affixes worthwhile to salvage.
The last method for gaining tons of Forgotten Souls would just be a simple conversion. Players can use the Alchemist to convert their Veiled Crystal, Raw Hide, and Iron Chunk into Forgotten Crystals. These 3 materials are easily farmed and passively gained while doing activities. The biggest downside of this method would be its astronomical cost in Gold. Each time players transmute their crystals into souls, it costs 25,000 Gold. At face value, the cost isn't all that high, but it's important to remember that nearly everything related to optimizing gear costs gold.
