Your Cut of Cloth—Is Tailoring the Best Profession for You?
Before you decide to level up Tailoring, you should evaluate the value of this profession as one of the two hogging up your limited profession slots. This is especially important when playing Classic and even more so with the pre-Cataclysm servers since the grind is seemingly eternal in comparison to Retail World of Warcraft.
Many tailors play cloth-wearing classes, such as Warlocks, Priests, and Mages. While all classes in Classic can wear cloth, these classes are designed for it specifically. Prior to The Burning Crusade’s release, it may be a popular choice for certain healing specializations to wear cloth even if their class is not meant for it. This is due to itemization issues in the early days of World of Warcraft. Keep an eye out for what is best for your character.
Tailoring isn’t just for making cloth armor, however. Tailors can also make bags that are larger than those sold by vendors. This is useful if you need extra space and don’t want to purchase from other players. Also, if you’re trying to make gold, tailoring made bags can turn a profit if you buy reagents at a low price and sell the bags when their prices spike.
Cosmetics are also a part of Tailoring. Shirts, for example, provide no value other than looks. Players typically look to shirts for aesthetic purposes, but some collectors and achievement hunters may have other motives.
As far as profession pairings go, tailors don’t rely on a gathering profession for their trade. While some Tailoring recipes require small amounts of leather, these reagents are often cheaply purchased from other players. The best profession to pair with Tailoring will be Enchanting, as you can take the cloth you gather from humanoids, convert it to Tailoring goods, and then disenchant the goods for Enchanting materials.

Now, you’ll want to purchase the materials needed. For a section of this leveling tutorial, you’ll need rare recipes from Qia in Winterspring (61.2, 37.2) that have a hefty respawn timer. Purchase the recipes for Runecloth Bags and Runecloth Gloves. To get these recipes, either camp out at this NPC’s location or purchase them from other players at an inflated price. As far as materials go, you may need more or less of certain reagents depending on your luck. Certain materials, such as Coarse Thread and dyes, can be bought from NPC vendors.
