Potions, flasks, and elixirs fit right in with the rest of Azeroth. The mystical land World of Warcraft is set in is wrought with mystery, just like the secrets alchemists hold to themselves. How do they turn dead plants into new life? How do they transmute elementals without breaking a sweat? In this guide to WoW Classic: Alchemy, you’ll learn everything you need to know to face the cauldron.
To start, the essentials of Alchemy will be covered. These essentials include things like what your toon’s setup should be, general facts about why alchemists are useful, and why you should learn Alchemy in particular. Then, a leveling guide will be provided—boiling and bubbling cauldrons are no fun when they explode in your face. By the time you’re done with this guide, you’ll have a maxed-out Alchemy skill track and you’ll be ready to face other challenges!
The Cauldron—Alchemist Essentials
The cauldron bubbles, an unknown concoction angry and storming within. This is a delicate typhoon, one that must be cautiously stirred to avoid catastrophe. Such is the job of an alchemist. Making potions, flasks, and elixirs takes knowledge, sometimes of the forbidden variety, and skill. Knowledge and skill both take time, effort, and gold to obtain. So, why should you dedicate yourself to learning Alchemy?
Alchemists will cite many reasons for beginning their journey. Alchemy can be an excellent profession to pick up for raiding, thanks to the following.
- Make your own potions, elixirs, and flasks
- Perform Transmutes
- ...and many more benefits to raiding exist!
Alchemy can also be useful for making gold, a currency that is especially valuable with the WoW Token prices being fairly low on Classic realms. How do alchemists make gold? It’s pretty simple!
Minimize costs by purchasing reagents while they’re priced low. Or gather your own.
- Focus on selling around raid resets
- Get into rare markets for rare items
- Transmutations can sometimes be profitable
- ...and many more ways to make gold exist!

With those benefits in mind, most everyone should want to learn Alchemy…if they have what it takes. Fortunately, like all professions in WoW, Alchemy can be enjoyed by anyone using any toon. If you wish to fully dedicate yourself to Alchemy, the following attributes will make your journey easier or more enjoyable.
- Alchemy is expensive. You’ll want a lot of gold, a way to get a lot of gold, or a lot of time on your hands
- Raiders will enjoy Alchemy’s perks to the fullest
- Goblins have the passive trait Better Living Through Chemistry, which improves their alchemical abilities
- Goblins are also known to blow things up, so you won’t have to worry about being judged for a failed experiment. It’s just in your nature!
- Profession pairings can help you save gold or make gold
- Herbalism allows you to supply most of your own materials, saving a lot of gold in exchange for a lot of time.
- Enchanting has the same mentality as Jewelcrafting. Once someone finishes a raid, they’ll have loot, and loot needs enchantments!
