With the release of PoE’s Settlers of Kalguur league, players are given a new means to gain items and currencies easily. Part of the league is the brand-new shopping system, which encourages trade with different towns in Wraeclast. Shipping allows you to exchange the resources you’ve collected for currency and items! Simply load up a boat with resources and a crew, then wait for the boat to return in real-time with a boatload of rewards in tow.
Shipping has its risks, however, which must be managed if you don’t want to lose both your crew and your payout!
Since the Settlers of Kalguur Challenge League just recently launched, information in this guide is actively being updated but may not yet be fully complete or may be slightly inaccurate as we continue to learn about the league!
Shipments
When you begin assembling your own settlement, you will have access to a dock with its own ships and crew. Each boat you send out is loaded up with a shipment – a pile of resources you want to trade away. Upon the boat’s successful return, each of those resources is exchanged for the usual in-game rewards like currency, uniques, scarabs, etc.
The types of rewards you receive in return depend on both the types of resources you’re shipping as well as the port you’re shipping to.
As you upgrade the harbor, you gain access to up to three boats, which can be sent on multiple voyages simultaneously for increasing returns. This system is a great way to receive some passive rewards without having to farm, instead rewarding players who invest time into building the town of Kingsmarch.
Resources
As a part of the Settlers of Kalguur experience, the townspeople of Kingsmarch will generate trade resources that you can then ship out to other ports.
Shipment Value
The quantity and quality of rewards you receive from a shipment are based on the total “shipment value.” Therefore, the rarer the resource, the better the rewards. The shipment value for each trip is also dependent on not only each type of resource, but also the port it’s heading to. So be sure to keep these in mind when sending shipments.
Dust
While the resources you ship affect the boat’s shipment value, adding in a resource called Thaumaturgic Dust will also multiply the value of that shipment, with the multiplier going higher the more Dust is added to that shipment. At 10 Dust, the value is multiplied by 1.5, 55 Dust by 2, 520 Dust by 2.5 and 8150 Dust by 3.
Rewards Based on Resources Traded
By trading specific resources, you will be able to earn specific rewards. Each resource is tied to a type of item, which is listed here:
- Crimson Iron
- Armor
- Orichalcum
- Weapons
- Petrified Amber
- Jewlery
- Bismuth
- Skill Gems
- Food
- Currency
Crew
To start a shipment, you’ll need to stock your boats with a Crew. As you send out a shipment of resources to other ports, your Crew members reduce the risk meter by an amount relative to their trait tier. Higher tier workers will allow you to ship higher shipment values at a time with little to no risk.
Crew members that are lost to risks can be permanently killed, which is why you must plan carefully when selecting a crew to send out.
Risk
No voyage ever goes smoothly, as the sea is likely to have bad weather, pirates or creatures lying in the deep ocean. As your shipment value increases, that shipment’s risk meter will fill up. This meter denotes a percentage chance of something going wrong with your shipment, with higher percentages also causing more severe outcomes to be more likely if something does go wrong. Certain risks may outright kill your crew or lose the shipment it’s carrying, so make sure that you keep the risk low while balancing a ship’s rewards.
Pirate Commandeering
In the event that a ship is commandeered by a Pirate Captain, the ship and the entire crew will be held for ransom. You have three options when this occurs:
- You can attempt to rescue your crew by fighting the Captain as a boss. Should you defeat them, they’ll drop their boss loot while freeing your crew from the pirates. Be aware that you’ll only have one opportunity to defeat the Captain, so if you die, that shipment will be lost forever.
- Second, you can pay the Bandit a ransom – which will be an amount of Gold. If you pay the ransom you get your shipment and Crew back – but don’t get any of the loot from the boss fight.
- If you’re unable to pay a ransom or fight the boss, you can always abandon the crew and cut your losses there.
This can also occur within the town of Kingsmarch, as the chances of being attacked by pirates increase the more developed the town becomes. Much like the pirates at shipments, they will also hold your town workers hostage, with the same 3 choices listed above.
Ports
Each shipment is sent to trade with a specific port. Each port has different types of rewards that they will send back with every shipment you make. As you level up the harbor in Kingsmarch, you will gain access to a variety of ports with which to trade.
Distance
Each port is some distance away from Kingsmarch, which determines how long it takes to ship to it. As the distance of the voyage gets higher, the longer real-time hours you’ll have to wait before you can receive your rewards.
Port Quotas
While you can trade different resources with a port, keep in mind that in order to claim their rewards, you must provide a port with a certain number of resources to meet their quota before you can receive rewards.
Refined resources like Bars will count for 5 times the required raw resource, so if the quota for Crimson Iron is 500, 50 Crimson Iron Bars will fill the quota faster than 500 Ores. You can fulfill quotas over multiple shipments, but only the shipment that finishes the quota will return with additional bonus rewards.
Make sure to satisfy each port’s quotas to fully optimize the rewards that you gain upon the shipment’s return.
