Path of Exile 2's Vaal Temple mechanic can give the most lucrative rewards if built right. The Temple is a 9x9 grid filled with empty spaces that you can fill with rooms. Each room adds a modifier to all the monsters in the Temple and will increase your reward yield until you reach the final boss, Queen Atziri. This guide explains the Temple’s mechanics and provides the most optimized room layout for the best loot rewards.
Temple Building Mechanics
Before you start building the Temple, kill the Architect boss to get Medallions. These give quality-of-life features when you build the Temple, like bonus crystal capacity and extra Medallion capacity. When you gain access to the Temple antechamber, you can access the Console to begin assembling the layout. You will be given 6 Room Cards, which you can use to place a room or a path on a tile of your choosing. The following rules must be followed when filling the Temple with rooms:
- Paths can only be placed when connected to another path
- Rooms cannot be linked to the same room type (i.e., Spymaster rooms cannot be linked to another Spymaster room)
- Closing the Temple will cause random rooms to Decay, preventing access to them. Defeating Atziri or the Architect will cause even more rooms to Decay. You can prevent a selected room from Decay using Juatalotli’s Medallion.
- If the temple has a long chain of rooms, the last 3 rooms in the chain will always be affected by Decay.
You can upgrade each room’s Tier, which increases the bonuses it provides up to Tier 3. To upgrade a room, you will need Quipolatl’s Medallion, which upgrades a room’s Tier by 1.
Temple Goal
Your goal for the Temple is to create a long, winding chain of rooms while minimizing the use of Path tiles for maximum rewards. This chain must be made with rooms that all upgrade each other using their respective adjacency bonuses. If you fill the Temple with multiple room chains and no paths, you can maximize monster density and thus, more chances for rare loot.
Room Types and Synergies
Each room upgrades another type of room when linked, granting adjacency bonuses. The following shows the kinds of rooms you can place down and what they upgrade.

Best Temple Layout
This app shows the ideal Temple build for the highest modifiers. Try to minimize the use of Path Cards and maintain a snake-like link of rooms to stack every modifier in your favor.
