How to Get Gunpowder in Windrose: The Ultimate Guide

In the pirate-infested world of Windrose, your survival often hinges on the roar of a flintlock or the blast of a musket. While a trusty cutlass can get you through a scrap, firearms provide the necessary range to dominate naval boarding actions and clear out island encampments. However, there is one resource that players consistently find themselves running dry on: Gunpowder.

This guide covers everything you need to transition from a lucky looter to a master munitions manufacturer.

Why Gunpowder is the Lifeblood of a Pirate

Gunpowder is a mid-game bottleneck that dictates your combat effectiveness. Without it, your pistols, blunderbusses, and cannons are nothing more than expensive paperweights. In the early game, you are mostly limited to whatever powder you can scavenge, which often forces players to rely on melee builds using clubs or crude weapons. Mastering the acquisition of gunpowder allows you to utilize high-burst damage builds that are essential for late-game boss encounters and larger ship battles.

You can also buy gunpowder from trusted sellers on PlayerAuctions and jump straight into high-level raiding with a fully loaded arsenal.

How to Craft Gunpowder in Windrose

Crafting your own supply is the only way to ensure you never run out during a heated exchange. However, the recipe isn't available immediately—it requires specific progression and infrastructure.

The Recipe

The standard recipe for a pack of gunpowder (typically yielding 10 shots) requires:

  • Sulfur: 10–25 units (depending on your Millstone tier)
  • Ash: 20–25 units
  • Crafting Station: Millstone

📌Note: Recipe requirements can vary slightly based on community reports. Some players cite a 25/25 split, while others report a 10 Sulfur / 20 Ash requirement after completing specific quests.

Crafting Requirements & Unlocks

  • Complete "Revenge is Best Served Cold": You generally cannot craft gunpowder until you have defeated the first main boss, Thomas Richards, and progressed the main story.
  • Unlock the Millstone: This is your refining hub. To unlock it, you must find Corn for the first time or craft "Millstone Parts" at a workbench.
  • The Iron Pickaxe: You cannot mine the necessary Sulfur nodes without at least an Iron Pickaxe.

Gathering the Materials: Sulfur and Ash

Acquiring the raw ingredients is where the real work begins.

Finding Sulfur

Sulfur is primarily located in the Foothills area, which is accessible after moving past the Coastal Jungle.

  • Appearance: Look for rocks with a distinct yellow, mossy appearance.
  • Location: While map layouts can be randomized, these nodes are most common in mountainous or volcanic-adjacent biomes.

Gathering Ash

Ash is significantly easier to find than Sulfur as it is a byproduct of basic survival.

  • The Kiln: Burning wood to create Charcoal in a Kiln will automatically produce Ash as a byproduct.
  • Grinding Charcoal: If you are desperate, you can grind 2 units of Charcoal at a Millstone to produce 6 units of Ash, though this is generally considered inefficient.

Alternative Ways to Get Gunpowder

If you aren't ready to set up a full industrial base, you can still find gunpowder through exploration and combat:

  • Pirate Encampments: Look for tent icons on your map. Large supply boxes inside these camps are the most reliable source of looted powder.
  • Blackbeard Camps: These specific camps (often tied to crew-recruitment quests) typically house chests with higher-than-average gunpowder drop rates.
  • Ship Battles: Defeating enemy ships and looting the floating debris can yield small amounts of munitions.
  • Buccaneer Warehouses: Rare locations that act as "loot vaults" for gunpowder and bullets.

Final Tips for Success

  • Auto-Refill: Always check if your gunpowder is equipped in your ammo slot. Community members recommend enabling "Auto-Refill" in the settings to avoid the "click-of-death" during reloads.
  • Conservation: Early on, use your firearms for high-value targets only. Use your sword for trash mobs to save your powder for the Foothills transition.
