Slayer is a skill in OSRS that's known for being both lucrative and risky. The good part? Many of the monsters assigned not only have rare drops, but also have better chances of dropping rare items during a task in which they're assigned to the player. The riskier side of things? Some of these monsters are positioned in the wilderness, making you vulnerable to PKers.
Locating Dust Devils
This guide will cover where to find and kill a particular monster that plays a role in the mid to high levels of the Slayer skill: the Dust Devil. First off, let’s take a look at where we can find them. These monsters spawn in three different locations in OSRS: the Smoke Dungeon, the Wilderness Slayer Cave, and the Catacombs of Kourend.
The Smoke Dungeon
The Smoke Dungeon is located in the northern part of the Kharidian Desert, west of Pollnivneach — once you’re in, you’ll be able to see Dust Devils wandering around, as well as an assortment of other monsters. The most important part of this place, however, is to the west, through a small entrance. The western part of the Smoke Dungeon has the most amount of Dust Devils in a single location in the entire game, so it's an excellent spot for slaying them. The only caveat is that you’ll need to have an active slayer task for Dust Devils; otherwise, you’ll be denied entry to the western portion. One other thing to note is that the dwarven multicannon cannot be placed in the western part, but it can be placed in the other parts of the dungeon. However, it’s not recommended to put one down anyway, as there are so many other monsters in the mix.
📌 Note: If you’re not wearing a Face Mask or Slayer Helmet whilst inside the smoke dungeon, then you'll begin to take damage rapidly. Be sure to take the necessary precautions before entering.
The Wilderness Slayer Cave
As for the Wilderness Slayer Cave, there are two separate entrances. Both are on the eastern side of the Wilderness, with one entrance found at wilderness level 18, while the other is accessed at a deeper point of wilderness level 29. Out of the two, we recommend entering from the level 29 entrance, as you’ll get to the Dust Devils much faster — simply enter the dungeon and walk into the room southeast of where you’re from. Be warned; there's a natural risk of doing your slayer task here, as it takes place in the wilderness. Fear not, with risk comes reward! This room is the only place with nothing other than Dust Devils, meaning you can place a dwarven multicannon, allowing you to speed up your slayer training significantly.
The Catacombs of Kourend
Last but not least are the Catacombs of Kourend. This place is unique in regards to Dust Devils, as they spawn at a higher level compared to the other two places — this allows for a higher amount of Slayer XP per kill, as the XP is based on the monster's HP. The catacombs are absolutely massive, spanning almost the whole continent's width, hence the many various entrances available to the player. These entrances are located in the following areas:
- Kingstown, investigate the giant white statue.
- Southwest of the Giant Pit, climb down, then go southeast to connect to the catacombs.
- Forthos Ruin, climb down, then immediately take the connection to the catacombs.
- A hole west of Shayzien Encampment, note that you’ll have to climb up first before revealing the entrance; otherwise, it is blocked by a boulder.
- East of Lovakengj, climb down the hole, note that you’ll have to climb up first, similar to the hole next to Shayzien Encampment.
- North of Arceuus, on the other side of the fence, lies the Dark Altar, initially blocked by a boulder, just like the last two.
As for which entrance is the closest to the Dust Devils in particular, choose the one from Forthos Dungeon. The entrance in the statue could be considered an alternative, as there's a teleport spell to take you there directly, which is convenient if you see yourself taking multiple trips to and from the catacombs.
Dust Devil Stats and Abilities
- Combat Level: 93 (110 for Kourend variant)
- HP: 105 (130 for Kourend variant)
- Max Hit: 16 (8 if wearing Facemask, 10 if wearing Facemask vs Kourend variant)
- Attack style: Ranged Melee
- Damage type: Melee
- All Defence stats: 0
- Elemental weakness: Air (35%)
Even though Dust Devils don’t exactly have anything resembling a complicated moveset, a bit of forethought is still needed in hunting them. They have the ability to drain your Attack, Strength, Ranged, and Magic stats all down to 1, as well as your Prayer, Defence, and Agility by half — the only way to combat this is by wearing a Facemask or Slayer Helmet.
The only other thing to watch out for is the way they attack. Ranged Melee indicates that they attack from a distance and target your Ranged Defence stat, but this is still taken care of with the Protection from Melee prayer.
The Optimized Loadout & Bursting Strategy
Now that we know where to find them and what they are capable of, it’s time to formulate a strategy for taking them down. Since they don’t have any kind of Defence against any particular style of attack, it would seem that just about any loadout would work, but there’s a catch — there’s a detail that makes one strategy vastly superior to all others. The strategy in question, referred to by some as the bursting strategy, uses magic to cast burst or barrage spells from the Ancient Magicks spellbook.
The efficacy of this method is entirely based on the fact that every single area where Dust Devils can be found is known as Multicombat areas — places that allow a player to be in combat with multiple enemies at the same time, meaning burst and barrage spells that affect a three-by-three area are incredibly effective. If we are to go into detail, the blood variants of these spells are the best choice, as they allow for a sustained stay at the slayer locations without needing much downtime to go to the bank and restock. Blood Burst and Blood Barrage both require level 68 and 92 Magic, respectively, so Blood Burst is at least in line with what you should have at this point, considering Dust Devils require a slayer level of 65 to even attempt to kill.
As for equipment, we could go for something with a high attack bonus for spells — this would usually make everything land more consistently, but is unnecessary for Dust Devils, considering they only have a Magic Defence of 0. Instead, we can ensure that we maximize our healing from the blood spells we cast by utilizing parts of the Bloodbark set, specifically the body, legs, gloves, and boots. This combination will allow us to heal for 33% of the damage we deal with blood spells. The head slot will be reserved for a Facemask/Slayer Helmet, as we will still need to protect ourselves from the Dust Devils' draining ability. Pairing this with an Ancient Sceptre will allow us to autocast our ancient spells and slightly increase our healing, an Occult Necklace, an imbued god cape, and a Magus Ring will all increase our potential damage output. The loadout should look something like this:
|
Head Slot |
Facemask/Slayer Helmet |
|---|---|
|
Body Slot |
Bloodbark Body |
|
Legs Slot |
Bloodbark Legs |
|
Hands Slot |
Bloodbark Gauntlets |
|
Feet Slot |
Bloodbark Boots |
|
Neck Slot |
Occult Necklace |
|
Ring Slot |
Magus Ring |
|
Cape Slot |
Any Imbued God Cape |
Aside from this, you'll of course need to bring the necessary runes to cast the spells you plan to be using, as well as prayer potions to keep your protection up and running — magic boosting potions will help you kill them quicker. Any remaining slots should still go to food as a failsafe, just in case you make mistakes and find yourself in a precarious situation.
Drops
Below, you'll find all the drop tables, including items, quantities, and rarities. The drop rate of these items denotes rarity.
📌 Note: Some of the items in the tables below will have two different numbers in the rarity column — this is due to the Dust Devils' nature as a slayer monster, having an increased chance of dropping certain items if you have an active task for them.
The average Dust Devil kill is worth 3247.70 coins if not on a task, and 4343.25 coins on an active task.
Bursting dust devils also yields incredible magic experience, but if you want to completely skip the initial level grind, utilizing Expert OSRS Skilling Services handles the setup seamlessly.
