The Final Dawn update introduces the Gemstone Crab as a new mid-level boss in Varlamore. It’s great farming boss because it’s an easy AFK target while dropping many valuable loot. It’s a great spot to increase your Combat EXP and obtain various uncut gems that are worth tons of OSRS gold.
Farming gemstone crabs is an excellent low-intensity combat method, though players looking to jump straight into endgame content often choose to Buy Ready-To-Play OSRS Accounts instead.
What is the OSRS Gemstone Crab
The Gemstone Crab is a mid-level boss introduced in the Varlamore: The Final Dawn update. It’s a group boss that spawns in multiple places and is a good source of Combat Experience and uncut gems. It’s a great AFK target because it’s not dangerous, so you can focus on using offensive sets to make it easier for you to defeat it. It’s generally considered a low-effort training boss that is also hugely profitable.
However, it does have a 12.5% EXP Reduction rate, but being able to AFK farm it makes this trade-off negligible. It also has no downtime, which means you can easily train here even with higher DPS. You also don’t lose any EXP for doing overkill damage, which makes the Gemstone Crab worth more than other crabs.
Gemstone Crab Farming Guide
Where to Find the Gemstone Crab
You can find the Gemstone Crab in the general area of Tal Teklan in Varlamore. However, you need to complete the Children of the Sun quest in the Twilight Emissaries series to open up the area. It’s also advisable to complete the Twilight’s Promise quest to enable the use of quetzals. The fastest way to reach Tal Teklan is to teleport to Civitas Illa Fortis, then use Quetzal Renu to get to the area.
The Gemstone Crab can spawn in three different areas within the Tlai Rainforest: north of Kastori and south and east of Tal Teklan. Each spawn point is connected by a cave passage, which you can use to get to where the boss will appear next. The Gemstone Crab doesn’t have a typical HP pool since the bar indicates how much time players have left. The boss stays at one spawn point for 10 minutes before burrowing and relocating to another area. Once the boss burrows, players can then mine the shell it leaves behind.
How to Farm the Gemstone Crab
Since the Gemstone Crab barely does any damage, you can focus on more offensive items while using your most potent weapon available. If you’re using a ranged weapon, you won’t receive any damage because the boss only does melee damage. If you’re a low-level player, we recommend using a bow or crossbow, so you won’t have to worry about sustainability while AFKing. There are several tips that you need to keep in mind while farming the boss:
- Once the Gemstone Crab burrows, you only have to click the Cave Passage to get to the following spawn location. You don’t have to locate the boss on the map manually. You can easily find the boss just by going to any spawn point and using the Cave Passage system to find where it’s currently situated.
- You don’t need to interact with the boss to loot the gems because you’ll automatically get them as long as you have a pickaxe.
- If you’re inventory is complete, all mined gems will drop to the ground, which makes it possible for other players to pick them up. Make sure you have enough slots or bring a gem bag.
- You can mine the Gemstone Crab remains as long as you are within the top 16 damage dealers. It doesn’t matter if you’re the highest or lowest DPS because the rates will be the same for all 16.
- If you’re doing Melee training, it’s highly recommended to use Blood Moon gear if you have it. If you don’t, then equip your best STR-boosting set.
- If you’re doing Ranged training, then the blowpipe is the best weapon to use. Otherwise, use the best crossbow or bow you have available.
- If you’re doing Magic training, then use your strongest staff that deals the highest damage.
- Go for the most amount of DPS you can, since overkill doesn’t waste EXP and every hit counts for the whole experience.
Note: Mining the crab does not contribute to mining EXP.
Gemstone Crab Rewards
While you can farm it solo, it’s more advantageous to grind the Gemstone Crab with groups. Only the top 16 damage dealers will be able to mine the drops for potential uncut gems. Here are the potential mining rewards you can get from the boss:
- Uncut sapphire (can be sold for 243 gold)
- Uncut emerald (can be sold for 408 gold)
- Uncut ruby (can be sold for 973 gold)
- Uncut diamond (can be sold for 2,250 gold)
- Uncut opal (can be sold for 122 gold)
- Uncut jade (can be sold for 104 gold)
- Uncut red topaz (can be sold for 2,263 gold)
- Uncut dragonstone (can be sold for 15,395 gold)
Note: You can get up to three random uncut gems from a single boss spawn.
You don’t need to have a specific Mining Level when farming the Gemstone Crab. Mining the boss is similar to looting, rather than a life skill. However, you still need the pickaxe to mine the Gemstone Crab.
