If you’ve been playing OSRS for a bit but are a little nervous about bossing, you’re in luck! Obor can be a little intimidating if you haven’t fought him before, as he deals high damage and requires a limited resource to gain access to, namely a Giant Key — meaning if you mess up, you’re going to, unfortunately, have to farm for the key again before going back. This guide aims to be informative and comprehensive, so we’ll cover beating Obor with magic, melee, and ranged, respectively, as well as going over different setups for members/pay-to-play (P2P) and non-members/free-to-play (F2P) alike.
This guide will be divided into two parts. The first will be for all F2P players. On the F2P side of things, equipment will generally be much cheaper and easily accessible, as there isn’t really anything super advanced available for F2P. Meanwhile, the second half of this guide will be for P2P players. Both sections will cover magic, then melee, and lastly ranged combat options.

OSRS Obor General Info
When it comes to armor and weapons, there are tons of different strong equipment in the game, but Obor doesn't require anything super extravagant. However, you'll see both P2P and F2P loadouts. Take heed to the fact that the P2P loadout will be more expensive. Worry not, though, you can still use some equipment from the F2P list as P2P, if you’re on a budget.
Regarding initial encounters, something to be careful of is that Obor may use his ranged attack immediately the moment you enter his arena, so it’s advisable to turn on Protect Against Missiles before entering. Therefore, every strategy will have 40 as a recommended Prayer level, since you unlock Protect From Missiles at 40 Prayer.
As for his melee attack, it's worth noting that it's capable of pushing you back, which will cause time to be wasted. To avoid this, make sure to position yourself with your back against a wall. This will allow you to act as quickly as possible and prevent you from being knocked back.
Note: There will still be a slight interruption to your attack animation. This is particularly important for all methods except the Snare method, so keep it in mind.
Obor's Stats
Before diving into the different strategies we can use to kill Obor, it's worth analyzing his stats to figure out what tactics to use for victory. Obor has the following defensive stats:
- 120 HP
- +35 stabbing defense
- +40 slashing defense
- +45 crushing defense
- +20 magic defense
- +20 defense against all ranged types
As far as offense is concerned, Obor is quite simple. He has 2 ways of attacking, those being:
- Striking with his club (crushing type): max hit, 22 damage
- Stomping the ground (ranged type): max hit, 28 damage
As you can see from the stats, magic and ranged are the most effective ways to deal damage, due to Obor’s low defense against those damage types. Meanwhile, in terms of offense, he can deal some serious damage if you’re unprepared.
Getting to Obor
Obor is most likely the first boss you'll come across, due to his location. His lair is located inside Edgeville Dungeon, west of the Grand Exchange, and accessing it is pretty simple — once you get the hang of it. Even an unintentional encounter with Obor is possible, given the nature of exploration and curiosity.
It's worth mentioning that there are two entrances to Edgeville Dungeon: the southern and northern entrances. For the quickest route to Obor, the north entrance is recommended. However, if you do choose to go through the north, you'll find that there's a gate guarding the entrance. The key to this gate, called the Brass Key, is located at the southern entrance, so head on over there first. You'll only need to do this once, as it'll remain open for all future encounters.
After that’s done, you’ll want to start slaying some of the conveniently placed Hill Giants present inside the dungeon — they'll drop the Giant Key needed to enter his lair and begin the fight. Hill Giants inside the dungeon have a 1/128 chance of dropping the key, so you’ll be farming for a bit. However, if you happen to encounter a Hill Giant in the wild, the drop chance becomes bigger, 1/64. There are also other ways to obtain this key outside of the dungeon. The Black Knight titan from the Holy Grail quest and Cyclopses in the Warrior's Guild each have a 1 in 128 chance of dropping the key. Not only that, but Obor himself has a 1/16 chance of dropping one too.
F2P Recommended Stats & Equipment
Magic
Recommended Stats
Now that we’ve clarified the method of access and gotten Obor’s stats out of the way, we can begin with the strategies required to take him down. Seeing as how weak he is to magic, that’s where we’ll start. The minimum stats you should go for are the following:
- HP: 50
- Magic: 50
- Defense: 50
- Prayer: 40
This will effectively place you at combat level 54, about half of Obor’s level of 106. With 50 HP and 50 defense, we'll find ourselves with a nice defensive base that will allow us some breathing room in this fight as long as we’re playing our cards correctly. The second idea for 50 defense is also to bump up your HP, but if you are planning on the pure route for your character, it is advised to gain HP through Strength, Attack, or other ways, such as Quests or Lamps.
50 Magic is essential for this strategy to work, as we will be using the Snare spell to keep Obor in place and attack him from a distance — this way, you won’t have to worry about his melee attacks very much. With this level of Magic, you'll also have access to Water Blast, which will be the most powerful offensive spell available at the mentioned level, in the standard spellbook. Lastly, 40 Prayer gives us access to Protect From Missiles, as we'll still be taking some hits, mostly from his stomp, which is affected by the aforementioned prayer.

Fighting Obor
The strategy is quite simple: run to one side of the arena and wait for Obor to come to you before using Snare on him. After that, you'll run to the other side and safely launch Water Blast until the Snare runs out — rinse and repeat. Make sure to keep an eye on your HP and eat when you feel a little too low for comfort, as well as your Run meter, so you can use that Energy Potion. That does it for the Snare method regarding F2P OSRS!
Melee
Recommended Stats
While melee isn't exactly ideal for dealing with Obor, it's still very much possible to win with a melee-centered strategy — as long as you prepare your equipment and stats to be at least the following:
- HP: 50
- Attack: 50
- Strength: 50
- Defense: 50
- Prayer: 40
- Ranged: 40
The only weird stat here is Range at 40, but this is to allow us to don the Green Dragonhide Vambraces.

Fighting Obor
Fighting Obor with a melee setup is probably the simplest a boss fight can be in this game. First off, position yourself such that you have a wall behind you; that way, you won’t have to go through the process of running back to Obor after getting knocked back by his melee attack. Remember to activate your Protect From Missiles right before entering the pit. Afterwards, make sure to deactivate your prayer between his attacks and reactivate it before his attack animation starts again. Also, remember to drink your Strength Potion right before entering, and throughout the fight if it lasts a long time.
Ranged
Recommended Stats
Ranged would usually be considered a good option for Obor, but the poor quality of ranged weapons at the level you fight him in F2P OSRS makes Ranged a pretty bad strategy — nevertheless, it's still workable. Here are the stats:
- HP: 50
- Ranged: 60
- Defense: 50
- Prayer: 40
You'll notice that 60 Ranged is quite high; this is to make up for the poor quality of F2P ranged options.

Note: The Green Dragonhide Body requires the completion of the Dragonslayer 1 quest.
The Maple Shortbow is the best weapon available, and that’s what we’ll be using, but it’s something that is unlocked at level 30 Ranged — it has a bit of a hard time keeping up with the other stuff that exists at this level. Also, make sure to use Adamant Arrows, as they're the best arrows available for this strategy.
Fighting Obor
Taking on Obor ranged can be about as simple as melee, it’s possible to win by standing still and shooting — just remember to turn on the Rapid weapon style before combat begins. Just be aware that you can take heavy damage. In this case, make sure to flick Protect From Missiles when Obor is about to attack, to protect from his stomp. If you want to do better in the fight, then it is possible to kite him — meaning, to move between your attacks. This can be quite difficult to do at first and will require a lot of attention to timing, so make sure to just have Protect From Missiles on at all times if you’re using this strategy. Also, one or two Energy Potions are useful if you plan to do this.
A lesser-known tactic that you could pretty much only discover by accident is how to safespot Obor — meaning that it is possible to align Obor’s pathing with the terrain so that he can’t reach you with melee attacks. To do this, you'll need to take notice of the 2 skeletal corpses in the top right corner of the arena and lure Obor to be next to them. Make sure he is next to the longer wall before running alongside the skeletons to the other side of them. This will hold Obor in place for some time, as his pathing can’t reach you — the pathing will, however, reset once he uses his stomp, so you'll still need to deal with him in melee somewhat.
P2P Recommended Stats & Equipment
Note: The equipment featured in the members section of the guide will be of higher quality and, as a result, will be significantly more costly than the F2P options. Should this present a problem, or if you haven't completed the required quests, you can simply swap out some equipment for F2P gear, and you'll still do just fine.
Magic
Recommended Stats
The recommended stats are the following:
- HP: 50
- Magic: 50
- Defense: 50
- Prayer: 40
Just like for the F2P Snare strategy, 50 Magic is essential for casting the spell that this strategy is named for — 50 defense and HP are a nice defensive base, and 40 Prayer is needed for Protect From Missiles. This time, however, reaching 50 Magic is doubly important, since at 50 Magic, you’ll also gain access to the Iban Blast spell. Relative to other spells at this level, this spell hits extremely hard with a max hit of 25 damage. It is by far the strongest spell you'll have access to at this level.

Also, if you haven’t completed the necessary quests for Iban’s Staff, you could still use the offensive spells, referred to in the F2P Magic guide. Still, this member version of the Magic guide utilizes the armor, as will be presented in detail below.
Fighting Obor
The strategy is quite simple, and quite identical to the F2P method, except it's much simpler now, thanks to the Swampbark Armor, as it increases the Snare duration from a 9.6-second root to a 13.2-second root. Otherwise, it's pretty much: run to one side of the arena and wait for Obor to come to you before using Snare on him. After that, you'll run to the other side and safely launch Iban Blast until the Snare runs out — rinse and repeat. Victory is pretty much guaranteed with this strategy and equipment.
Magic Tank
Recommended Stats
This is a bit of a different strategy, as we won't be relying on Snare to help us out in this fight, but rather just tanking through Obor’s attacks as we cast spells in melee. This route is only recommended for P2P players, because there aren't any good armor options for F2P that offer both good offensive magic boosts as well as good melee/ranged defenses. Now onto the stats:
- HP: 50
- Magic: 50
- Defense: 60
- Prayer: 40
- Ranged: 42
- Attack: 42
- Strength: 42
There are quite a few differences in terms of stats. For starters, we'll be required to have 42 in all other combat stats so we can wear the recommended armor. Furthermore, Defense will have to go up to 60, as we'll be relying on purely tanking hits instead of avoiding them. 50 Magic is still recommended, as we'll still be using Iban Blast as our offensive tool.
Note: We'll no longer just be using Protect from Missiles as our primary prayer. Instead, we'll need an overall defense boost from a prayer such as Steel Skin to keep us alive.

The Void Knight set will be an excellent choice of armor for our endeavors, as it allows us to boost our offenses significantly. With the Void Mage Helm and a complete set, we'll increase our magic accuracy by 45%, and an additional increase of 5% magic damage with the complete Elite set.
Fighting Obor
This method is extremely simple; it’s all about killing Obor faster than he can kill you.
Make sure that Steel Skin is always turned on.
Note: You can also activate Protect From Missiles when you enter his arena, to protect yourself from the immediate ranged attack you'll face once you enter. You can turn it off for the rest of the fight and focus on keeping Steel Skin (increasing defense by 15%) afterwards, though.
That’s pretty much it — just remember to eat when you need to.
Melee
Recommended Stats
Due to the change in armor, excluding Green Dragonhide Vamps, stats will also exclude the Ranged requirement.
- HP: 50
- Attack: 50
- Strength: 50

- Prayer: 40

Granite Armor offers excellent protection against Obor but is hard to acquire naturally, so make sure to purchase it from another player at the Grand Exchange. It can be a bit costly, yet affordable in most cases.
Fighting Obor
Similarly to the F2P strategy, this can be one of the simplest fights in the game. Just make sure to keep a wall behind yourself at all times to avoid getting knocked back, and turn on Protect From Missiles right before he attacks. Drink your Strength Potion before the fight and reset the buff when appropriate; also, don't forget to eat! Another thing to mention is that even if the Granite Longsword has the Lunge combat style, which would utilize Obor’s slight relative weakness to Stab, Chop and Slash will still be superior options due to the sword's innate attack bonuses. Do this and you’ll win without trouble.
Ranged
Recommended Stats
Ranged as a strategy can be pretty solid for P2P, as players will have access to good equipment at this level.
- HP: 50
- Ranged: 50
- Defense: 50
- Prayer: 40
You may notice that the Ranged level is lower here than the recommended amount for F2P. This is because we don’t have to compensate for poor weapons.

Depending on whether you're comfortable or not with the balance on offense and defense, you might wish to swap between the Snakeskin Boots for a +3 increase in Range bonus, or to go with Rune Boots, going -1 in Range bonus, yet compensating in defenses.
Note: You could go with Rune Boots if you are able to imbue your Shortbow. This way, you'll have a resulting +5 in Range bonus, and the imbued version of the weapon will use only 50% of the Special Bar, instead of 55% like the standard.
Animal Magnetism Quest is required to equip Ava’s Accumulator; it’s a fairly easy Quest. Beyond providing Range bonuses, Ava’s Accumulator will also attract your fired ammunition back to its respective slot at a rate of 72% — lessening the hassle of picking up arrows every now and then!
Fighting Obor
The strategy is simple: you can position yourself next to a wall to avoid being knocked back and use Protect From Missiles between Obor’s attacks to conserve prayer points. Eat when appropriate and make use of your Special Attack to kill Obor even quicker. Remember to use the Rapid weapon style. Alternatively, bring an Energy Potion and kite him, as mentioned in the F2P guide for Range.
Just like with the F2P section for fighting Obor with Ranged equipment, you can safespot him using the skeletons, just to the right of the arena — make sure to check out that tactic in the F2P section above.

Closing Words
Obor is one of the few bosses available to F2P and is quite a simple fight — despite this, or rather, because of his simplicity, there's a wide range of strategies and equipment options available to use to defeat him.
This guide aimed to be in-depth and comprehensive, since Obor is many people's first non-quest boss. We hope that this guide was helpful and managed to get you into the world of bossing in OSRS. Good luck with your future ventures!
