The Clock Turns Back: Riot Announces League of Legends Classic

Riot Games has officially unveiled League of Legends Classic, a highly anticipated game mode dedicated to reviving the early, untamed eras of the MOBA. Following a series of leaks, the mode was fully revealed on stage during the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) Finals, complete with an exhibition showmatch featuring legacy pros like Doublelift, Ambition, and Captain Jack.

This is not a standalone client; rather, the experience is integrated directly into the live League of Legends client, complete with its own isolated account leveling system (capped at level 30) and an Influence Points (IP) economy to manage legacy progression systems.

Release Date and Live Patch Structure

📌Note: League of Legends Classic will officially launch on July 29, 2026 (July 30 KST depending on region) alongside the rollout of Patch 26.15.

Unlike standard MMO classic server structures that anchor themselves permanently to a historical timeline, Riot is taking a hybrid development path inspired by *Old School RuneScape*. The game mode does not run on a single past patch code. Instead, it is a curated "best-of" amalgamation primarily built around the Season 3 era template. Moving forward, the mode will evolve through community voting, allowing players to decide how future updates, content drops, and balance adjustments are rolled out.

Roster and Champions: The Return of Legacy Kits

At launch, the Classic roster features exactly 60 champions. This core lineup guarantees the inclusion of League's original 40 launch champions from 2009 (such as Alistar, Annie, Ashe, Blitzcrank, and Jax), supplemented by a selection of prominent figures from the Season 3 era.

The primary draw of this mode is the restoration of pre-rework kits, legacy base skins, and older visual assets, though players utilizing modern cosmetic skins may still see updated high-fidelity models on the Rift. Riot has confirmed that the roster will expand gradually over time, with champions like Graves and Urgot explicitly earmarked for future integration.

Broken Legacies: Classic Champion Builds That Do Not Exist in Modern League

The restoration of the old item shop, the three-tree Mastery pages, and stat-stacking Runes/Quintessences completely upends modern meta constraints. Several notorious, broken champion builds that were balanced out of existence years ago are fully functional in League Classic.

AP Master Yi

One of the most infamous builds in League history returns. By stacking raw Ability Power, Master Yi leverages massive AP ratios on Alpha Strike  and Meditate . A single Alpha Strike can decimate an entire enemy team, and securing a kill instantly resets his cooldowns via Highlander, allowing him to chain Alpha Strikes consecutively. When pressured, his Meditate scaling provides near-invincibility and immense health regeneration.

Pre-Rework AP Sion

Long before he became a massive, crowd-controlling tank, Sion was a terrifying burst mage. Classic Sion features a targeted Cryptic Gaze stun and a massive Death Caress shield, both boasting 1.0 AP ratios. The playstyle relies on activating the shield, stunning an enemy from range with a single projectile, walking up, and detonating the shield to instantly burst down squishy targets.

Deathfire Grasp Mages (Veigar & LeBlanc)

The return of Deathfire Grasp (DFG) changes the baseline TTK  for mages. DFG allows players to deal 15% of the target's maximum health in magic damage upfront while amplifying all subsequent magic damage dealt to that target by 20% for 4 seconds. Assassins and burst mages like LeBlanc and Veigar use this item to effortlessly delete high-priority targets, regardless of the enemy's defensive itemization.

Stacking Stat Strategies & Revive

The old game mechanics allow strategies completely alien to modern players, such as stacking multiple Sunfire Capes for overlapping passive burn damage on stealth champions, or using legacy Summoner Spells like Revive and Rally to alter macro map pressure.
