Bungie is known for its in-depth ARG puzzles, dating back to the Halo days and continuing into Destiny. Marathon is no different, with its own set of hidden coordinates, encoded messages, and some real-life interactions to discover. Recently, players extracting from the Outpost map have received a mysterious message that reads Survey Module Unlocked along with a set of random letters. This article will discuss the secret behind this ARG and what to expect.
Outpost Extraction Message
Before this message came up, the Marathon community had to locate hidden terminals scattered throughout Perimeter, Dire Marsh, and Outpost that, when activated, provided a video feed. As the ARG was getting close to being solved, Bungie released a strange coded transmission.
After completing an Outpost run, players would receive a mysterious message in their inbox simply titled “Survey Module Unlocked.” Upon opening it, the message will say:
“Marathon Planetary Index: Fragmented
Tau Ceti IV Terrain Data: Awaiting Verification
-infil to zones (perimeter; dire marsh; outpost)
-Observe surroundings
-gain understanding of zone layout
-information is survival”
This follows with 5 random letters on 23 spaces, hiding a message. Every participant received a piece of the message, which, when put together, reveals the phrase AGAIN MOTHS AWAIT THE RAIN. Soon, the community realized it was an anagram, which, when unscrambled, shows the true message: THE MARATHON IS WAITING. This heralds the imminent launch of the Cryo Archives map.
New Cryo Archives Map Unlocks Soon
Cryo Archive is set inside the fabled Marathon ship and will be the hardest map in the game by far, but also the most lucrative for daring Runners. This zone is one of the few locations that guarantee Prestige-tier items for salvage and gear, and gear is locked behind rooms that require keys on the Marathon ship. This zone will also be home to the Compiler boss, which is set to be the most challenging enemy in Cryo Archives, requiring Runners to bring in their best gear.
Cryo Archives has its own requirements before entering when it releases: You must:
- Be Season Level 25
- Unlock all Factions
You do not need the keys to enter Cryo Archives, but the best loot rooms will need them.
This map will be part of Season 1 for Marathon, as part of its most important content for the endgame grind with massive rewards for those who dare to risk Cryo Archive’s dangers.
