Table of Contents
Chapter 1 NPCs
Horse Yaoguai
The first NPC you can find in Black Wind Mountain is the Horse Yaoguai and he’ll appear in most chapters of the game. To find him, you’ll first need to beat Lingxuzi and unlock the Back Hills Shrine. From there, stick to the left “wall” until you find a small cave entrance. The path is marked by two unlit torches. Once inside, you should see the Horse Yaoguai resting and a meditation spot for one free Spark. Speak to the Horse and exhaust all his dialogue. He’ll disappear for the rest of Chapter 1 and reappear in Chapter 2.
Shen Monkey
Another important NPC you can find is the Shen Monkey, who’ll be instrumental for your run as he can upgrade your healing gourd and even give you access to the Soaks and Drinks that change your gourd’s properties. He can easily be found in the Bamboo Grove area, nearest to the Marsh of White Mist shrine. On your way down, you should see a cutscene of the Shen Monkey tied to a tree by Snake Patrollers. Defeat the enemies and he’ll be free and provide his services. He’ll relocate to a new area afterward, but we’ll save that for later.
Chapter 2 NPCs
Xu Dog
One of the most important NPCs that you must locate for this Chapter is the alchemist Xu Dog. He will provide the Celestial Medicines that will permanently upgrade most of your stats in the game. Starting his questline will also unlock medicine crafting for you at any shrine, which is why it’s vital to find him. He can be found near Sandgate Village, near the Village Entrance Shrine. Starting from there, go down the ridge and take the path to the right until you find yourself inside a cavern. Xu Dog can be found examining a rock inside the cavern. Speak to him, and he’ll ask you to defeat the boss Lang-Li-Guhh-Baw. Go forward through the wooden scaffolding, and you should see the boss in the pit. Defeat it and return to Xu Dog to unlock medicine crafting and progress through his story.
He can later be found under the Crouching Tiger Temple, though this means you’ll need to defeat the Tiger Vanguard boss. Once the boss is defeated, head down through the temple, and you’ll eventually find him again in the Cellar shrine. From this point forward, you can come back anytime and turn in your Mind Cores for Celestial Medicine. He’ll remain in this area for the rest of the game unless you unlock a secret area which we’ll discuss in Chapter 3.
Man-in-Stone
The Man-in-Stone will be vital in unlocking the Azure Dust Transformation and will also serve as a shopkeeper at the end of his questline. You can find him in the Fright Cliff area, nearest to the Squall Hideout shrine. From the shrine, head to the path on the right, then go through the trench. You should see a docile Rock Guai and the Man-in-Stone at the end of the trench. Speak to him, and he’ll ask you to retrieve a treasure.
Go back to the shrine, then take the path to the left. Go through the cavernous area and stick to the leftmost path until you find a large rock with glowing crystals. Hit it to trigger the Mother of Stones boss fight. Upon her defeat, she’ll drop the key item for this quest. Return to the Man-in-Stone with the item and he’ll become targetable. Hit him to start his boss fight. Once he’s beaten, he’ll give you the Azure Dust spell, and ask you to return after a rest. Come back later and buy the Sobering Stone from him as this will be important for the next NPC.
Drunken Boar
This NPC is also in the Fright Cliff region, with the Rockrest Flat shrine nearest to him. To find him, head straight until you see a small wooden fence. Break the fence and you can find the Drunken Boar resting on a rock. Speak to him and he’ll ask for the Sobering Stone. Give him the stone, which prompts him to look for meat in the Crouching Tiger Temple. Exhaust all his dialogue, then head to the temple. From the temple shrine, head upstairs then take a right on the topmost alcove. You can find the Drunken Boar sitting next to a wall. Here, he’ll ask you for a Jade Lotus, which you might have picked up earlier but if not, you can find Jade Lotuses on bodies of water. Deliver the Jade Lotus, which causes him to speak about the Realm of Gold. After this, he’ll return to the area near Rockrest Flat area.
To progress further, you must defeat the First Prince of Flowing Sands in the Valley of Despair. You can trigger this boss fight by either killing the Second Prince first or throwing a Pungent Chunk of Flesh on the pit near the boss arena. Defeating the First Prince will drop the Arhat Gold Piece.
Return to the Drunken Boar with the Arhat Gold Piece and speak to him to trigger his boss fight. Defeat him and he’ll open the way to the Kingdom of Sahali for you.
Horse Yaoguai
This NPC will reappear in Chapter 2, inside Sandgate Village. You can find him tied up to a wooden post. Exhaust his dialogue and then defeat the Rock Wolf boss. Return to the Horse Yaoguai after taking down the boss., and he'll ask you to go ahead, meaning that you’ll meet him again in Chapter 3.
Chapter 3 NPCs
Pagoda Realm Prisoner
As you make your way through the Lower Pagoda Realm area, you can find an NPC inside one of the cells that you can speak to. You won’t be able to free him at the moment as the only way to open the cells is by defeating the boss Captain Lotus-Vision. You can find them near the Upper Pagoda shrine. From the shrine, look down at the ledge for roof tiles. Jump down the ledge and head to the cavernous area to fight Captain Lotus-Vision. Defeating the boss will unlock all the cells in the Pagoda Realm, including the prisoner’s cell. However, you’ll still need to defeat other bosses to progress his story.
Start by defeating Captain Wise-Voice at the center of the Pagoda Realm. This is the main boss of this area. Next, you’ll need to find the Spirit of Captain Void-Illusion. You can find this item in the Valley of Ecstasy, near the Longevity Road shrine. From there, head to the right area and look for a fallen statue. Interact with the fallen statue to get its spirit.
Lastly, you need to defeat Captain Kalpa-Wave, who is also the main boss that guards the entrance to New Thunderclap Temple. By this point, you should have all the Captain spirits. Return to the prisoner and he’ll give you the Chu-Bai Spear weapon and you can even interact with the dead prisoner to unlock a new Transformation spell.
Fox Guai
Once you reach the Valley of Ecstasy, you’ll eventually reach the Forest of Felicity shrine. Right in front of the shrine is a corpse with a fox pelt on it. This is the fox spirit that will grant you an item that can transform you into a Fox. You must head to New Thunderclap Temple and stick to the leftmost portion of the area. You’ll find the boss Non-Void, though he won’t be hostile until you reach his room while in the Fox form. Once defeated, return to the fox spirit and she’ll give you the Snow Fox Brush.
Treasure Hunter
The Treasure Hunter is located in the Bitter Lake region. Starting with the North Shore of the Bitter Lake shrine, head south and keep going until you find a small temple area. You’ll see two Apramana Bats harassing a man. Defeat the bats and talk to the Treasure Hunter until all his dialogue is exhausted. Next, equip the Ring of Fire spell and head to the Tower of Karma shrine. When you see the Treasure Hunter, cast Ring of Fire next to him. He’ll warm up and tell you about the secret boss, Green-Capped Martialist. Start at the Forest of Felicity, then follow the path to the bottom until you reach a pond. Go behind the big rock on the other side of the pond, then drop down the cliff. Defeat the boss and you’ll unlock the spell Spellbinder.
Chen Loong
Return to the North of the Bitter Lake shrine again. This time, head south towards the coast. You’ll see a dragon person standing on the water. Fight him and he’ll become friendly. He’ll ask for a pill of immortality, meaning that you must go back to the Cellar shrine in Chapter 2 and speak to Xu Dog, who’ll give you the pill that Chen Loong is looking for. Return to Chen Loong and he’ll give you the Ruyi Scroll that will teleport you to the Zodiac Village. Xu Dog will move to this village, but you can also bring the Shen Monkey there by talking to him.
Horse Guai
This time, you can find the Horse Guai in New Thunderclap Temple, on the same route you take for Non-Void. Head up the stairs on the leftmost building, then look for the NPC standing on the bridge. He’ll be leaning on a pillar. Talk to him again, exhaust his dialogue, then he’ll move on to Chapter 4.
Chapter 4 NPCs
Horse Guai
This time you’ll find this NPC trapped inside a cocoon in the Middle Hollow area. First, you’ll need to defeat the main boss of this area, Centipede Guai. Once defeated, the cocoon can be found near the arena. Hit the cocoon once and then exhaust his dialogue. He’ll thank you and leave for Chapter 5.
Daoist Mi
This NPC is exclusively found in the secret area of Purple Cloud Mountain. Once you reach the zone, head towards the Petalfall Hamlet and rest in the shrine there. Head towards the main path and you’ll find Daoist Mi standing near a table. You’ll need the Violet Hail item to continue his quest. To get this item, you’ll have to defeat the yellow robed enemies in the hamlet. Once you get the Violet Hail, return to Daoist Mi to initiate his boss fight. After beating him, you’ll earn the Violet Hail Transformation spell.
Chapter 5 NPCs
Pale-Axe Stalwart
As you progress through Chapter 5, you’ll eventually fight the Pale-Axe Vanguard as a boss. Defeat him and he’ll become friendly. He’ll take you to destroy the Five Element Carts found throughout the main path. You can’t miss these since they will block the main story path. However, there is one cart hidden in the Furnace Valley. From the Valley Entrance Shrine, follow the primary path until you reach a downward slope. At the end of that slope, turn right into the magma and keep going until you see a crashed cart. Pull the string on its mouth to interact with it. After destroying the cart near the Rakshasa Palace, rest in a nearby shrine and return there to see the Pale-Axe Vanguard resting on a wal. Exhaust his dialogue.
Afterwards, go to the Field of Fire zone and rest on the Fallen Furnace Crater shrine. First, go through the rolling boulder puzzle until Pinping Fox clears the flames. Then, return to the boulder path until you see an open area. Go through it until you reach the Cooling Slope shrine. From there, you’ll encounter the final Elemental Cart. Defeat it to end this questline and unlock the secret Bishui Cave area.
