As a newer player in Old School RuneScape, if you’ve ever wandered around Varrock and looked at all of the buildings around, then you’ve most likely stumbled upon the Varrock Museum and thought not much of it, since it doesn’t look too immediately interesting. However, there are quests to be completed and rewards to be had, all related to the Varrock Museum — so follow us in this guide, which will cover all that you need to know about it, as well as the reward system for OSRS Kudos.
REWARDS
Before going into how to earn Kudos as well as the Varrock Museum at large, it may be important to understand what you have to gain so you can make up your mind before engaging with this mechanic. The rewards can all be found below.
REWARDS FOR OSRS KUDOS THRESHHOLDS
The rewards in the table below are all of the ones that can be earned from acquiring a certain amount of Kudos. It is worth noting that Kudos are never consumed or used up, meaning that you would, for example, only need to get 49 more Kudos to go from 1,000 Mining Experience to unlocking the Bone Voyage quest.

REWARDS FOR OTHER ACTIVITIES
Despite not requiring Kudos, there are still some activities available for you to partake in, which can yield some quite good rewards, most notably, all of the potential Experience.
- 1,000 Coins
- 1,000 Experience in Slayer and Hunter
- 2,500 Mining and Crafting Experience
- 138,000 Experience in any skill you like
- The ability to enchant Ruby Necklaces via Lvl-3 Enchant
📌Note: While some tasks can be repeated infinitely, thus potentially yielding infinite rewards, the rewards list above is simplified and comes with the assumption that you will only complete each task once. You can, however, find out what these infinite rewards are and how to earn them if you continue to read further down the guide.
HOW TO EARN OSRS KUDOS
Despite it being a rather simple system, there are several ways of gaining Kudos, this section aims to clarify all of these methods — one thing to note is that there is a hard limit as to how much Kudos can be earnt by each method, meaning that you will eventually have to switch to another if you want to earn the maximum amount of Kudos. Regardless, we can begin with the only option available to both members and non-members: ancient relics.
HANDING IN ANCIENT RELICS
Before handing these relics over to the museum to receive our Kudos, we must first cover how to acquire them. This can be done fairly easily. The first step is to complete the Below Ice Mountain quest, after that, you can get your trusty pickaxe and start mining inside of the Ruins of Camdozaal to randomly acquire Barronite Deposits — a smithing level of 14 is required for the final step, which involves smashing these Barronite Deposits via the Barronite Crusher to reveal our precious ancient relics:
- Ancient globe
- Ancient ledger
- Ancient astroscope
- Ancient treatise
- Ancient carcanet
After you’ve done that, you can head to the Varrock Museum and hand these ancient relics to Curator Haig Halen. Doing this will earn you 1 Kudos and 200 Coins for each unique ancient relic you’ve donated, up to 5 times, seeing as there are only 5 unique ancient relics.
📌Note: You can always donate more relics if you want. You won’t get any amount of Kudos, but you will still be rewarded with 100 Coins. This, however, is not a recommended strategy for earning Coins. If you want to get rich efficiently, please visit our Money-Making Guide.
UNCLEANED FINDS
The activity, including uncleaned finds, can only be started once the player has completed the The Dig Site quest. For this activity, you’re tasked with cleaning various specimens found on the digsite. You must be wearing Leather Boots and Gloves, as well as have a Trowel, Rock pick, and Specimen Brush in your inventory. There are other tools related to this activity as well, but they can be easily found on a tool rack located to the south of the dig site.
You can find a variety of items, most of which you will be allowed to keep; however, to find out further about what you may do with a certain specimen you’ve uncovered, you can simply ask one of the archeologists at the site. Some items can be placed in the storage crate for the player to collect.
While the above is all good and fun, the real reason for doing this is to earn Kudos; this can be done by finding and displaying 5 certain artefacts, those being:
- Pottery
- Old symbol
- Ancient symbol
- Old coin
- Ancient coin
Each artefact will earn you 10 Kudos once displayed, for a total of 50 Kudos.
📌Note: If you’ve discovered all of these artefacts but have not found the Clean Necklace yet, it is advised that you continue with this activity. Once you’ve gotten your hands on the Clean Necklace, you can show it to an archeologist who will then unlock part of the Lvl-3 Enchant spell for you. You will then be able to enchant Ruby Necklaces (given that you’ve already reached the prerequisites for casting the spell normally).
NATURAL HISTORY QUIZ
Probably the quickest and easiest way to earn a decent amount of Kudos, the Natural History quiz has absolutely no requirements and can be started and finished inside the Varrock Museum. Find and talk to Orlando Smith on the first basement floor. There, he will give you a lecture about certain animals in the world of Geilinor — followed by visiting the 14 different plaques inside the Museum and answering correctly on each quiz to get a total of 28 Kudos once done with all of them. You can also ask Orlando Smith for an additional reward at the end to earn 1000 Hunter and Slayer Experience.
TIMELINE DISPLAYS
An incredibly easy way of earning lots of Kudos if you’ve already completed a lot of quests is through Timeline Displays. Simply completing the quests below and talking to Historian Minas in the Varrock Museum can net you 80 Kudos and 18,000 Experience in any skill you like.

Fossil Displays
Last but not least, Fossil Displays is an activity that can yield up to 72 Kudos and a whopping 120,000 Experience in absolutely any skill you like. There are empty display cases throughout the museum that can be filled with fossils. On the natural history floor, you will find a set of stairs. Here, there are several displays for you to fill out. To do so, players will need a spine, pelvis, skull, and a set of both limbs and ribs. There are also plant displays that require a root, a branch, a leaf, a mushroom, and a stump. Each display grants you 2 Kudos, as well as additional XP.
With that out of the way, fossils can easily be found on Fossil Island when doing just about anything related to the island itself. Fossil Island can be found on the north-east side of Morytania. This is a special area where players can train their skills. This island is being explored by the Varrock Museum and is available to members only. The island itself is surrounded by several other islands, which lie at around 13 according to the map found in the House on the Hill’s basement. Despite the large number of surrounding islands, only one can be accessed apart from Fossil Island, which is Lithkren. If you are looking to access Lithkren, you’ll find yourself there during the Dragon Slayer II quest in the game.
📌Note: It’s worth mentioning that you first need to complete the Bone Voyage quest to gain access to Fossil Island, which in itself requires 100 Kudos to even begin — so you’ll have to participate in some of the other activities before gaining access to this one.
When you find a fossil on the island, you can clean it and bring it to one of the 36 museum displays, wherein 5 of the same fossil is enough to fully complete a display and earn you a reward. You will, in total, have to gather 70 small fossils, 60 medium fossils, 25 large plant fossils, and 25 large regular fossils.

Conclusion
The Varrock Museum can be a fun break from doing certain other quests or grinding Experience for a skill for hours on end. Despite not being a core part of the game in any way, shape, or form, with its own rewards, it can show you a different aspect of the game and still benefit you while you’re doing it, which is what OSRS is all about.
