What is Wuthering Waves?

It's a brand-new action RPG by Kuro Games, who also made Punishing Gray Raven. Featuring an open world, pretty combat animations, and a cast of attractive characters, Wuthering Waves is looking to be a must-play gacha game.

At the time of writing, it has yet to start the closed beta testing. Kuro Games has released a handful of character introductions, but there are some whose forms and likenesses have been revealed. A short clip of their gameplay is also shown. Besides those, nothing is known about them, not their names or alliances.

Some factions are revealed on the official website. The one with the most characters is the Midnight Rangers. Five characters from this organization are also the most prominent in trailers and gameplay videos. A group called the Black Shores is revealed, with An'ke, the adorable pink-haired sheep counter. Lastly, the player character is called the Rover, a title NPCs can call them despite having a custom name. Their allegiance is unknown, and others are wary of them despite their helpfulness.

Tidbits of lore show that the game's world once went through an apocalypse called the 'Calament.' As you can surmise, this resulted in mutations for any surviving lifeform. The world has calmed down, with survivors banding together to rebuild. However, a new threat is looming, coinciding with the Rover's arrival.

Resonators, humans with acceptable and beneficial mutations, are the collectible characters and the suvivors' central workforce. Six have been revealed, with (as mentioned) two more whose names and allegiances are still unannounced. Rover, as the player character, isn't included.

Wuthering Waves uses Genshin Impact as a blueprint, but streamlines the combat system to make it easier to control the playable characters. This, coupled with a futuristic setting, makes Wuthering Waves a different take on a tried-and-tested genre.

Additionally, the characters have fresh  designs based on a real-world take than the fantasy-esque designs from Genshin. While the story isn’t anything to crow about, the setting is very immersive. Players may want to explore Solaris-3 and the attractions offered within.
