OSRS' Hardcore Worlds are unforgiving. One wrong move in the wrong place can end your run, and some activities that are perfectly safe for a regular Hardcore Ironman are deadly here. This guide covers which activities are safe and which aren't, how to protect your gear, and how to choose between Reset and Transfer if the worst happens.
The New Death Rules
Hardcore Worlds use the stricter Hardcore Group Ironman (HCGIM) death rules. That means many activities safe in a standard Hardcore Ironman can end your run here. As the official launch post confirms, if you die, any items that would normally drop to a gravestone are deleted from the game for good.
❌ Unsafe Activities (Run-Ending Deaths)
Jagex has warned that dying in any of these places counts as an official Hardcore death, which ends your run and deletes the items you were carrying:
Fight Caves & Inferno
The only exception is the Karamja Elite Diary resurrection, covered below.
Chambers of Xeric
Raiding here counts as an official Hardcore death and ends your run.
Barbarian Assault & Pest Control
The Hardcore servers have dedicated worlds for these minigames, but dying in them is still unsafe.
Camelot Training Room
A run-ending death zone despite being a training activity.
Dream World
Dying during Lunar Diplomacy counts as an unsafe death.
Fishing Trawler
Minigame deaths here still end your Hardcore run.
PvM Arena
The new PvM Arena is on Jagex's list of unsafe locations.
Magic Training Arena
Training magic here does not protect your Hardcore status.
Nightmare Zone
Dying in NMZ counts as an official Hardcore death.
Random Events
Even random events can end your run if you die in them.
Rogues' Den
A run-ending death zone on Hardcore Worlds.
Player-owned House (PoH)
Dying in your own house is still unsafe here.
✅ Safe Activities (Hardcore Status Kept)
These are confirmed as safe. Dying in them won't cost you your Hardcore status:
Minigames
Castle Wars, Clan Wars, Soul Wars, and the TzHaar Fight Pit.
Questing
Only the fourth phase of the Koschei fight in The Fremennik Trials counts as safe. Dying in any other part of the quest is not covered.
Diary Resurrections
The Resurrection reward from the Karamja Elite Diary (for the TzHaar Fight Cave) and from the Elite Western Provinces Diary (for Zulrah).
🔑 Essential Safety Measures
Keep Escape Crystals Stocked
You get one free when you start in Death's Office. Buy backups as soon as you can, since Death sells them for 10,000 coins each. They're essential protection against server lag and disconnects.
Bank Often
Anything bound for the gravestone is deleted when you die, so never carry gear or supplies you can't afford to lose. Only items in your bank or other storage survive, and only if you choose to Transfer your character afterward. If you Reset, your bank is wiped too.
After an Unsafe Death: Reset or Transfer?
When you suffer an unsafe death, everything in your inventory or worn gear that would normally drop to a gravestone is deleted. You keep 3 items (or 4 if Protect Item was active), and then you have to make a permanent choice: Reset or Transfer.
Option 1: 🔃 Reset (Wipe and Restart)
Reset wipes your stats, quests, bank, and even the 3 to 4 items you protected. As one starter survival guide puts it, you're sent back to play as if you'd just left Tutorial Island.
💡When to Reset: Pick this if your character is low-level, the run is young, or you don't have much wealth banked. It's the quickest way back into the one-life challenge on the same account, with no new membership needed.
Option 2: 📩 Transfer (Move to the Main Game)
Transfer moves your character, protected items, bank, and all other storage out of Hardcore Worlds and into the main game for good. There's no way to bring that character back to the Hardcore servers.
💡 When to Transfer: Pick this if your character has real progress, high skill levels, or rare drops you want to keep. Since your bank comes with you, you can sell it off on the main Grand Exchange, buy bonds, and fund the membership for your next Hardcore attempt.
The Golden Rule of Bank Safety
Decide whether you'd Reset or Transfer before any risky activity. If you'd Transfer, bank anything valuable before a dangerous trip, because your bank survives the move. If you'd Reset, your bank gets wiped anyway, so every risk is a risk to your whole account's worth.
