Halsin is one of the primary party members that can be recruited in Baldur’s Gate 3, but he can also be easily missed if you don’t follow the right steps in his questline. This requires completing his requirements in both Act 1 and Act 2, which can be tricky. But don’t worry, that’s why there’s this guide to help show you where you can find him and how you can permanently recruit him.
Locating Halsin in Act 1
As you progress through the storyline, the Tadpole problem will eventually lead you to the Emerald Grove. Here, you’ll need to speak to Kagha to progress through the main questline, which will eventually lead you to the Shattered Sanctum, where Halsin is located. To reach this area, you must head west of the Druid Grove and continue in that direction past the Blighted Village. Once you reach the Goblin Encampment, head inside and you’ll reach the Shattered Sanctum. From here, locate the Worg Pen and free Halsin.
After Halsin is freed, he’ll return to the Druid Grove and will ask you to kill the Goblin leaders that are harassing the Grove. Return to the camp to kill Priestess Gut, Minthara and Dror Ragzlin. After their defeat, a celebration will be held and the Tieflings in the Grove will make their way to Baldur’s Gate. Halsin will tell you that you must pass through the Shadow Cursed Lands to reach the city, which will kick off Act 2. Before you go, make sure that you convince Halsin to accompany you to Moonrise Towers and become a member of your camp.
Dispelling the Shadow Curse in Act 2
Whether you go through the Mountain Pass or through the Underdark, you’ll eventually make your way to the Shadow Cursed Lands. Upon reaching this region, speak to Halsin at camp and ask him about the curse. This will start the quest to dispel the curse as Halsin will ask you to locate a boy named Thaniel.
Start by going to the Last Light Inn and interact with the sleeping Art Cullagh, which will automatically start the task to wake him up. To do so, head to the House of Healing and kill Malus Thorm, either through combat or successful speech checks to take the Battered Lute quest item. Bring the lute to Art to wake him up, which will then allow him to give Halsin the lead on Thaniel. Halsin will ask you to meet him on the lakeside north of the Last Light Inn. Here, you’ll be tasked with defending Halsin’s portal against the Shadow Cursed enemies sent to destroy it.
After defending the portal in 4 turns, Halsin will return to camp with Thaniel and give you the task of restoring the boy. By this point, Halsin will become a full companion and join you for the rest of Act 2. Your next quest is to locate Thaniel’s other missing half, which will direct you to the Ruined Battlefield, where you must locate the House in Deep Shadows. It’s best that you bring Halsin for this quest since he'll have some unique interactions. You’ll find Oliver, the missing half of Thaniel, in this location. Speak to him to start his game of hide-and-seek. Whether or not you succeed, Oliver will get angry and run into a portal. Follow him and you’ll find him shielded by a shadow dome.
To remove the dome, you’ll have to kill the Wraiths and Shadows protecting him. Each enemy killed will damage the dome until its destroyed. Speak to Oliver and convince him to return to Thaniel or allow Halsin to speak with Oliver. After reuniting Oliver and Thaniel, all you need to do now is defeat Ketheric Thorm for the main story quest so that Halsin will become a permanent party member for the rest of Act 3.
