Best Items to Smith

Best Items to Smith Runescape

Smithing is one of the 28 skills in RuneScape 3, and it is available to free2play and members. As such, the best things you can smith in RuneScape 3 will differ depending on whether you're f2p or a member. Another significant modifier when deciding the best item to smith in RuneScape 3 is if you're smithing to earn RuneScape gold or just want to chill and have a relaxed semi-AFK smithing experience.

One final factor that will influence what your best pick is the smithing level you're at since, as you level, you will unlock better and better options. On top of everything, if you're playing on an Ironman account, you will have a different approach to smithing than on a regular account.

In RuneScape, there are four main activities to level up your smithing: smelting metal bars from ores, forging items at an anvil, the smithing minigame, the blast furnace, and the social hub for Smithing: the artisan shop. In contrast, all the smithing activities will give you XP at various rates. Check out our Runescape Skilling Hub for other guides.

Useful Items/Buffs When Smithing

Before you decide on what to smith, you should consider getting at least some of these items and buffs, as they will improve your efficiency:

Smelting

If you're going for smelting ores into bars, you will benefit from using smelting urns which automatically fill up with bars as you are smelting them and which you can teleport away from your inventory. Not only you'll get extra quality of life with them, but you'll also earn some extra XP once you teleport them away. The modified blacksmith helmet will give you a 1 percent increased chance to smelt an extra bar. It will also give you a 1 percent XP boost.

The superheat form prayer reduces the time you need to smelt bars by 1 tick each. This means you will make more bars per hour, resulting in more XP and sometimes more GP or less GP waste, depending on what you're smelting and the current market prices.

The smelting gauntlets also represent a considerable upgrade, and you can get them from the family crest quest. The bars you smelt will be automatically added to your metal bank, and you'll be able to smelt 60 bars at a time instead of 28. A good alternative is using the brawling gloves, which will give you 50 percent more XP, but obtaining them is harder and involves the risks of the wilderness. They also have a limited amount of charges and are untradeable, which makes getting them free smithing XP and, therefore, you should save them until higher levels where you'll get more XP per charge.

Forging

If you’re going to forge items with your Smithing skill, you should get the Blacksmith Outfit. The complete blacksmith outfit, which you can obtain from the artisan's workshop reward store, will give you a 6 percent XP boost when smithing, so it is always best to get it as soon as you can

The Varrock armour, which you can obtain from completing the Varrock achievement diary, is also great for smithing if you don't go for the smithing outfit or if your goal is GP rather than XP.

Once you get to 80 Smithing, you can get the crystal hammer if you completed the Eyes of Glouphire and Plague's End quest and are a member. While using this hammer gives you a 1 percent chance to smith at double speed.

There’s also a consumable that will give you an increased chance to progress your forging faster, the perfect juju smithing potion, and a few unlocks will automate part of the process.

Free-to-Play

Best Profits

Generally speaking, Smithing is slow or expensive in free-to-play worlds because you won’t have access to many items. If you’re going for profits, you should smelt bars, but this won’t give you much XP.

Alternatives

Alternatively, you can train your Smithing skill during Dungeoneering and up to a certain extent through questing.

Members

Best Profits

As a member, smelting bar is also the best if you want to profit. However, you’ll get more XP since you’ll be able to use a lot of boosting perks and enjoy a more relaxed activity because of some other perks, which can give you an AFK time of about 2 minutes and a half.

Alternatives

As a member, you also have free-to-play alternatives to train during Dungeoneering, and even more quests will award you smithing XP. On top of these, you will also be able to mine corrupted ore which is a nice AFK alternative at high levels (after 89) since it will give you more XP than smelting bars. If you want something slightly more intense that will give faster XP rates without costing you a fortune, you can make platebodies.
