It's not very often that a game developer hits a home run and gets its very first title ever named PC Game of the Year, but that's just what happened when Grinding Gear Games released the critically acclaimed RPG Path of Exile in 2013. Expanding on the third-person action-adventure RPG format that games like Diablo made famous, Path of Exile added ultramodern graphics and a more realistic look than the recent Diablo III, instantly earning it a rabid fan base.

One major reason for that success is Path of Exile's free-to-play nature, as Path of Exile costs nothing to pick up. The game makes its money from microtransactions, which means it's up to you how much you'd like to invest in it.

In terms of gameplay, Path of Exile is much more Diablo II than III, with a lot of fast-paced play, and even icons and a user interface that heavily borrows from the series. Questing is similar to Diablo, involving heavy combat in vast dungeons filled to the brim with baddies, but PoE makes it easy to join up in parties by hosting the game on servers that players can connect to and party up to take on dungeons together with ease.

Seven classes are available in this RPG, which are a bit different from the regular class names, with the Duelist, Marauder, Shadow, Ranger, Witch, and Templar available for play at the beginning, and the Scion unlocked later. In a more traditional RPG manner, however, each of these is focused on one of the three main attributes of Dexterity, Intelligence, or Strength. These focuses make it easier for the player to invest in the skills that fall under them, but PoE gives players a lot of freedom to customize their characters by allowing the player to invest in any skill, even if it doesn't fit their core attribute.

What is PoE Currency?

Orbs are the main currency in Path of Exile. While they mostly serve as a means to improve gear, their secondary use as currency sees them being traded to NPCs and even other players for gear. They allow players to conduct trades and acquire powerful equipment and other items required to complete quests. Furthermore, different orbs can have different powerful effects.

What to Use PoE Currencies On?

When used for their main purpose, orbs only affect one or two properties of an item, depending on the orb in question. Certain orbs change the rarity. An excellent example of this is the Orb of Alchemy, which upgrades a regular item into a rare one. Another would be the Orb of Chance, which, rather than simply upgrading normal gear to the Rare tier, upgrades it to a random tier.

Some orbs change a gear’s modifiers like the Orb of Alteration and Augmentation, which respectively rerolls and adds modifiers on Magic items. There’s also the Chaos Orb and Exalted Orb; they are respective counterparts of the Orb of Alteration and Augmentation for rare-tier gear. On the other hand, if you want the modifiers on your gear but don’t like its values, you should use a Divine Orb. It rerolls at random all the explicit value modifiers.

If your problem is the sockets on your gear and/or their links, then you’ll need the Chromatic Orb and the Orb of Fusing. The former changes the color of gem sockets in gear, whose results depend on the stats being required by the gear. For example, if it requires much Strength, then the resulting gear will have a red socket, blue for Intelligence, and green for Dexterity. The latter, meanwhile, is used to link two gem sockets, allowing players to use support gems on a particular skill gem they like. Also, this helps them save time and effort in finding the same gear with a different socket link.

Last but not least is the Shapers Orb. Rather than modify gear, it upgrades the tier of the map it’s used in when you’re the Atlas of Worlds, which allows the user to get better gear. Although no number of POE Exalted Orbs can be enough for a player, farming orbs and waiting for the trading process to complete can be tedious.

Path of Exile Currency

Path of Exile (POE) is a dark and gothic top-down MMORPG in a horror-themed world, and allows you to fully customize your character according to the way you wish to battle hordes of evil. It may sound like another Diablo clone, but it isn't. • Chaos Orb - Rerolls rare gear modifiers.

  Chaos Orbs are the main currency in Path of Exile. Nearly everything is priced in Chaos Orbs, until you get to high-ticket items which are priced in Exalted Orbs. Unless you are looking to blow some money and have fun, Chaos Orbs will nearly always be used as currency, with a few exceptions.

  The true use of the Chaos Orb is to reroll the stats of a rare item. When you use it on a rare item, it fully rerolls all of the stats on it, randomizing the number of stats, the number of suffixes and prefixes, etcetera. If you’re looking to burn a lot of money and maybe make a cool item, Chaos Orb spamming items has a very small chance of creating something great.

  The other uses for the Chaos Orb, which you will likely engage with at some point, are master crafting and Zana mods. Master crafting allows you to add a single stat to your items, and many of the good stats that you can add are priced in Chaos Orbs. However, if you’re a big map runner and want to get your full investment out of the map, the biggest disappearance of your Chaos Orbs will be through paying for Zana modifiers. Whenever you run a map you are given the option to add content to that map for the price of Chaos Orbs. The offered mods are, historically, different types of league modifiers from past leagues. Things such as Beyond or Nemesis can be added to the map for a small fee, payed in Chaos Orbs. This allows you to get more experience, or increase your currency returns if you properly juice up the map. If you are engaging with this mechanic correctly and frequently, it can set you back hundreds of Chaos Orbs each play session – but it’s well worth it!

• Orb Of Fusing

  Orb of Fusing may not be the most glamourous currency in the game, it’s certainly not as rare or as flashy as Mirrors, Eternal Orbs, or Exalted Orbs. However, they are likely the most practical and useful currency type within Path of Exile. Orb of Fusing is used to link the sockets on your gear together. Getting a better weapon is often a good way to boost your damage, but almost nothing is better than moving from a five-link body armour to a six-link one. Orb of Fusing is what lets that happen. Unfortunately, it can often take many of them in order to achieve your goal of finally getting that six-link. The average cost of Orb of Fusing to get a six-link is one thousand! This is why, even though they are fairly common, they are so valuable.

• Vaal Orb

  The Vaal Orb is a valuable asset. This orb simply corrupts an item and can be used to corrupt even the mightiest of weapons to offer additional strength and produce extremely powerful results.

  The Vaal Orb is perhaps one of the few most expensive items in the game and can be best farmed by using natural farming methods and purchasing it from an external source, such as PlayerAuctions.

• Exalted Orb

  Exalted Orbs add a random characteristic to a rare item. There are two traditional ways to farm an Exalted Orb: The first is to farm for other currencies and buy Exalted Orbs, while the second is to enter the maps and hope that your find one during your quest. 

• Orb Of Chance - upgrades Normal items to a random Rarity.
• Mirror of Kalandria - duplicates stuff that is not unique and not corrupted.
• Eternal Orb - also creates a duplicate, but you use it for another reason.
• Orb Of Alchemy - upgrades Normal items to Rare.
