OSRS Thermonuclear Smoke Devil Guide

thermy osrs

The Thermonuclear Smoke Devil, or Thermy, is a straightforward Slayer boss that you’ll need a level 93 Slayer to kill on top of a Smoke Devil Slayer task or a Thermonuclear Smoke Devil task. Even though you can only kill him while on task, you will generally need to hop a few worlds to find an empty one since the boss is famous due to its simplicity.

You can kill him using either melee or magic, and you cannot pray protect against his attacks since his attacks are typeless. This makes any recoil damage useful against him, but it also means you will use plenty of consumables during your trips for the most methods you could approach when fighting him.

The easiest and most reliable way to get to him is by using the fairy ring code BKP, which you will most likely have unlocked when you get to 93 Slayer. However, if you took an alternative path and haven’t unlocked fairy rings, you can use a ring of dueling and teleport to Castle Wars.

Slayer Masters

Since the Thermonuclear Smoke Devil is a Slayer boss, you must be on a Slayer task to kill him. You can either receive a smoke devil task or a boss task from either of the three strongest Slayer Masters:

  • Nieve
  • Duradel
  • Konar

To obtain a Thermonuclear smoke devil task, you will need to have unlocked the “like a boss” slayer unlock, and you are much less likely to get it than getting a smoke devil task since you can get many other bosses as a task when you get a boss task. The maximum quantity you can choose for a boss task is modified by the tiers of your combat achievements you have completed:

  • None: 35
  • Easy: 40
  • Medium: 45
  • Hard: 50
  • Elite: 55
  • Master 60
  • Grandmaster: 65

However, you will be able to kill a much larger number of Thermonuclear smoke devils if you get a smoke devil task, instead, regardless of your combat achievements:

  • Nieve 120-185
  • Konar 120-170
  • Duradel 130-200

Restricted Gear

Thermy’s lair is within the Smoke Devil Dungeon, and this means you must be wearing either of the following three headpieces of gear:

  • Face mask
  • Slayer helm
  • Imbued slayer helm

Unwritten Rules

There are also a few unwritten rules governing Thermy since there is no instance in which to kill him due to its popularity. For example, you will consume many supplies for most of the methods because he is a pretty supply-heavy boss. You will need to leave the area and then return quite often for banking, resupplying, and depositing the acquired loot. Even more so if you do the POH method, where you won’t need to use supplies to maximize your profit.

It is an unwritten rule that if, during this time, another player starts killing Thermy, you will not demand that they hop worlds since you left the Thermy area. However, you might still ask them, especially if there are indications that you’ve been there and it didn’t take you too long on the banking trip.

Thermonuclear Smoke Devil Strategy for Melee and Magic

There are a few methods to kill the Thermonuclear Smoke Devil, and you should choose one according to your skill levels, other goals, and ultimately, your preference. You can use either magic or melee to kill Thermy. For both of them, you can use the Redemption method or normal food, but with more bank trips, or you can also mitigate damage regardless of the combat style you choose using different methods. With magic, you can safespot Thermy, and with melee, you can use the walk-under method to avoid being hit.

Melee

Melee-ing Thermy is simple; you must grab your best melee strength gear combined with magic defence and out-damage Thermy. This is pretty simple since you can use either food or redemption to restore some health.

Magic

Using magic is also simple. Pray Augury and redemption if you use that to restore your health and attack Thermy. Similarly to the melee method, you must make sure you out-damage Thermy and keep your prayers up. Additionally, you can integrate blood spells, thralls, or ice spells for longer trips or more efficient kills.

Best Methods for OSRS Thermonuclear Smoke Devils

Redemption Method

The redemption method is the most classic yet resource-heavy way to kill Thermy. Instead of bringing food, you will bring prayer or super restore potions and turn on the redemption prayer. If your prayer level is over 90, you will restore anywhere between 22 to 24 hitpoints each time your health reaches below 10 percent, prolonging your trips by around 4 times if you bring regular food.

However, this is more expensive than using regular food, and it will make the whole process somewhat more click-intensive and more focused since you will need to quickly drink another sip of prayer pot/super restore pot and reactivate both redemption and piety/augury whenever you restore health from the prayer.

POH Method

This method is generally done with melee, but swap your legs for your best strength gear. For example, instead of using Karil’s leatherskirt, you will want to use the Bandos tassets if that’s the best you own. For this method, you will need either an ornate rejuvenation pool in your player-owned house or the elite desert diary completed for infinite teleports to Nardah near the Elidinis Statuette.

The POH method involves a lot of running, and what you need to do to go to thermy’s room, place your cannon, then spec the boss and either have a few more hits and teleport out or teleport out and go either to your POH if you have an ornate rejuvenation pool or to Nardah and pray at the statue to restore your stats. You can get 1 kill per trip without consuming any resources. However, because you’ll have to leave the room a lot, you might waste a lot of time, especially if other players try to occupy your spot while you’re out.

Thermonuclear Smoke Devils Safespotting Method

Safespotting can be done while using magic. To safespot, use your powered staff on longrange and bring water, death and blood, or chaos runes together with the ancient magicks spellbook to freeze Thermy at a distance before attacking him. This method is suitable because you won’t spend as much on supplies since you rarely get hit at all, but it is slightly more click-intensive. This method takes advantage of Thermy’s relatively small attack range and lets you be on whatever spellbook you like when using powered staves.

Walk Under Method

The walk-under method is the melee version of not letting Thermy attack you, and you do so by walking under him. The basic method involves walking under him, coming out for a hit, and going right back under him to avoid an extra hit each time. You will still take half of the damage, but for some players, the extra click intensity is worth it since it will help save on consumables and extend the trips.

You can also take it one step further and make sure there’s an ash right under Thermy to “freeze” him in place by clicking on it each time you walk to attack and back underneath him. This makes the method much more rhythmic and easier.

Final Considerations

The Thermonuclear smoke devil is a pretty easy boss with no complex mechanics, even though you’ll need a high slayer level for him. He is worth killing for his unique drops and his pet, and depending on luck and the method appr
